Welcome to the Million-Sellers Club Super Mario Maker

And yet again, Nintendo has created a masterpiece to be enjoyed for years to come in their latest game, Super Mario Maker! It was shared, recently, that there had already been 1 million levels created and shared online. Now, the news continues to be great surrounding the game.

Today it was revealed that more than 1 million units* of Super Mario Maker have been sold around the world since its launch on Sept. 11**. The addition of 1 million new “fan” developers has led to the creation of more than 2.2 million Super Mario courses, which combined have been played nearly 75 million times.

I have been saying for some time how incredible this game is/would be just for the amount of nostalgia is has sparked for me and so many other fans around the world. It now appears that I was far from alone in that. As evidenced by the numbers coming out, just 3 weeks after launch, Super Mario Maker is well on its way to becoming a major hit in the same vein as all other games in the series.

“For Mario fans around the world, including myself, Super Mario Maker was a dream 30 years in the making,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “The game has captured and unlocked the imaginations of gaming fans of all ages and brought their dedication to Nintendo to a whole new level.”

This is the type of fantastic news that Nintendo certainly needs to continue to receive. With the wonderful library that is already available on Wii U, and the buzz around this game being so great, it only spells a good holiday season for the company. Especially as this appears to be the eve of the final year of the current Nintendo generation for both handhelds and home consoles. Keep up the great work, Nintendo!

Nindies Wednesdays — They Will Be Here Before We Know It…

Our Nindies showcase this week will take a look at a few titles that are soon on the way to Wii U, as well as another Developer interview. For many fans there is an idea of game droughts that we have to contend with from time to time, but as of late, I truly believe that droughts are a matter of perception. There are plenty of games available to play on WIi U if you know where to look! The eShop is a great place to start.

It looks as if Freedom Planet will finally be getting its long-awaited release on Wii U tomorrow. The developer, Galaxy Trail, shared the wonderful news via Twitter. Freedom Planet, of course, is a game that has been featured in several Nindies@- events with Nintendo and Damon Baker, so it’s great to finally see that it will be available soon.

Finally Mighty No. 9 fans have a release date, and soon an opportunity to get their hands on the game that has been long-in-development. The game is set for release in North America on February 9, 2016 and Nintendo 3DS at a later date.

Another of the Nindie mainstays is the highly anticipated Fast Racing NEO from Shin’en Multimedia. Still slated to be coming soon, this Wii U exclusive was shown off recently and it looks like it was a hit.

Color BombsAlso, the Nindie dev behind several budget titles in the eShop, RCMADIAX,  is preparing to release another game next month. His newest game, Color Bombs, is set to release on October 22.

This week’s developer interview is again from PAX Prime with Wayforward Games, the developers behind Shatae Half-Genie Hero.

I hope these updates are as wonderful as they appear to be and continue to bring even more value to this game and the Wii U (and 3DS) for many months (and years) to come. The evergreen nature of Nintendo hardware/software is legendary, and this type of activity only goes to strengthen that image.

Do you think these additions are worth your attention, time and resources? How much time do you still invest in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U? For 3DS? Will this bring you back to the game, if not?

Nintendo is Ramping Up Its Push for Fall With TriForce Heroes

Earlier this year during E3 2015, Nintendo announced the next iteration in the Zelda franchise for their handheld audience titled The Legend of Zelda: TriForce Heroes. As time has progressed through the year, we have gotten more and more details, information and, in certain settings, the opportunity to go hands-on with it. The game will, however, soon be released for all to enjoy.

Form a legendary trio with your friends and tackle dungeons and boss battles together in The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes, coming to the Nintendo 3DS family of systems on Oct. 23. Presented in the same top-down style as the critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds game, prepare to solve inventive puzzles as a team and dress Link in a range of outfits to enable new abilities that enhance your adventure.

If you have seen any of the game play footage, you will notice that players are able to customize their Link characters, and these differing appearances (or outfits) for Link have significance in-game.

In the Kingdom of Hytopia, a fashion-obsessed realm where sartorial elegance is celebrated, an evil witch has placed a mysterious curse upon Princess Styla, casting the realm into disarray. With citizens calling for the return of a legendary trio of “Totem Heroes” to protect them, and King Tuft offering a unique reward for whosoever lifts the curse, venture into the Drablands to hunt down the witch and restore peace and stylishness to the land.

Each of the game’s 36 outfits comes with its own special abilities that help the three Link characters solve puzzles and navigate difficult terrain. For example, “Goron Garb” allows Link to swim in lava, while the “Zora Costume” helps him swim through water with greater speed.

With all of the puzzles in store for players to solve, there looks to be plenty of content waiting. Of course, there are many who will gravitate heavily toward the multi-player facet off the game’s mechanics, but single player fans need not dismay, because there is plenty of room for you to have fun, too.

You also have a variety of ways to explore the game across its 32 stages. You can play in solo mode along with two paper doll-like figures called “Doppels.” Or you can use an Internet connection to go online in multiplayer mode and partner with two other heroic players who also own the game. You can choose to team up with a combination of players who are and are not part of your Nintendo 3DS friend list. Finally, Download Play allows you to connect locally with two other friends who own a system in the Nintendo 3DS family, even if only one person has the game. Only by working as a team will you be able to progress through the various hazards lying in wait, but for those who master an area, bonus challenges can be unlocked for access to more valuable rewards.

To share your great acts of teamwork and skill from throughout the game with others, players can visit the Photo Bro shop managing the in-game Miiverse Gallery. As well as posting these snaps to Miiverse, you can even unlock Miiverse stamps, which you can apply to your hand-drawn creations.

Zelda fans will certainly have another fantastic entry to have and enjoy, and quite possibly quell some of the angst for the Wii U iteration to release (hopefully next year). In the mean while, will you be picking up this sure-gem? Have you been able to play any demos of it, yet? How excited are you to visit the Kingdom of Hytopia in this latest adventure?

Yoshi’s Woolly World GameStop Demo Event

Nintendo will be holding a demo event for Yoshi’s Woolly World at select GameStop locations on Saturday, October 3, 2015. The event will take place from 1pm-4pm (local times). This event will give gamers, fans, and possible new customers the opportunity to play the Wii U, and try out the new game prior to launch in North America.

Knitting yarn, patchwork, and other handicraft materials combine into a whimsical and crafty backdrop for our knit Yoshi to explore. Instead of eggs, this time Yoshi tosses yarn balls that he can use to clear blocked paths, tangle up enemies, or even knit together platforms and warp pipes. It’s time to get crafty.

Be sure to check the list of store locations here for the location nearest to you.

Will you take the opportunity to participate in the GameStop event? Are you anticipating the North American release of this game? Will Yoshi’s Woolly World be a Day-1 buy for you?

Stay Fresh With a New Slosher Weapon

And again, Nintendo is keeping it fresh in Splatoon, with yet another new weapon. This weapon will be available for purchase/play tonight in Inkopolis. As per standard, the new weapon will be available tonight at 10pm EST/7pm PST.

This new weapon is called the Tri-Slosher. As the name suggests, it is a new slosher-style weapon that projects ink in three angles of attack, simultaneously.

Will you be testing out the new weapon tonight? How much are you anticipating getting your hands on it? How satisfied are you with the steady release of new content? Is it enough? Too much?
