New Pokémon Direct Tomorrow Morning

Nintendo announced that the company will holding a Nintendo Direct in the morning. This Direct will be focused on Pokémon, and presumably the company’s plans for the rumored, yet unannounced, Nintendo Switch offering.

In one week, Nintendo’s E3 will kick off with their Nintendo Spotlight presentation, followed by the Treehouse Live streams, but it seems the company wants to lead into the event next week by sharing some potentially blockbuster news this week.

It will definitely be interesting to see what the company does with this 8-minute video presentation, and I look forward to seeing it all. The company has a track record of sharing big news leading into E3, with mixed results to follow, but with all that Nintendo has been doing to push forward their message and advance their momentum, I am supremely confident that their recent history will go a long way toward establishing a winning week ahead.

Are you a Pokémon fan? What do you expect to see during the Direct? Do you think this is foreshadowing for the coming E3 information?

The Onslaught of NX News

Over the past few weeks, we have seemingly gotten daily news, updates and rumors about the Nintendo NX from every source, save Nintendo themselves. Most of the news, I have allowed to pass, without comment and offering my opinions on. Today’s news, though, seems to be more than I want to let get by without saying something.

Dr. Serkan Toto, known by many game fans for his timely Japanese translations on Twitter, has indeed shared some news obtained from some of his very credible sources.

This is interesting because many accounts that we have heard over the course of the rumor season has suggested that there will indeed be a handheld component in addition to a home console component to the NX. However it comes together as a concept, we are sure to be in position to get some really incredible news very soon directly from Nintendo.

One thing that is highly encouraging about a lot of this information that is “leaking” about the NX is the fact that a lot of it is really seemingly consistent, despite their varied sources. Most of the information has been great, but the one thing to note most is the fact that Nintendo has yet to confirm (or even deny) any of the info, so until they have done so, we won’t know for sure what NX is/will be. That does not mean speculation, guesses, ideas and even wishes are not welcome! Until Nintendo formally announces NX we only have our imaginations to give us our best understanding of the platform.

Some people have grown tired or even fed up with NX “news” without the aid of official information, but for Nintendo it is not a bad thing having the hype grow for it at this point because one of the excuses that hampered the Wii U early was the lack of knowing of its existence. That cannot be said about NX, the more hype that circulates around its impending arrival. In the end with the organic nature of consumer electronics, no matter how “perfectly” these companies play their hands, the final play is always in the hands of the customers.

How are you taking in all of this information and rumors? Have you grown tired, or are you embracing the “news”? Do you anticipate picking up the NX at launch, or are you waiting to see what it is first?

Rumor Has It… pt. 2

My Thoughts…

Yesterday, I shared the rumored leaked NX information that was recently found, and there was a lot to go over. Now, after all that has been shared, I must reiterate these are still only rumors, and as such, none of this may be even remotely true. However, the details seems to truly be quite plausible.

First let’s look at the idea of a complete platform versus a single console. This is actually not a new concept for Nintendo as they have shifted gears on platforms a few times over the decades. Remember first two home console generations were in the Nintendo Entertainment System family, then handhelds (after the Game & Watch series) were of the Gameboy family of systems. So, the concept of shifting gears with the platform is very much a high probability. Especially with Bowser, Toad, and Yoshi Wii Remote Plusthe reception that the Wii platform seems to get among gamers, in the market, right now. And some of the language that was used by Iwata-san and Reggie Fils-Aime when asked about the NX could be seen as supporting this same idea. They often said that the NX was not a direct replacement for the Wii U or 3DS, and a new platform simply makes sense.

Now, to move on to the thought of an NX portable as well as an NX home console. A lot of other thoughts in the community believe this was going to be the case, though with differing application. Most have debated that there would be a single hybrid system, a “Fusion” of sorts. However, two separate systems with the possibility to sync them together sounds like a masterful idea. I think it works even better with the NX portable releasing next year with a 6-12-month head start on the NX home console.

Mario and Luigi with DeNAAlso, having a universal Operating System that will translate for ALL Nintendo systems going forward (from NX on) will be great. Even as it points out in the “leaked” info, this will give Nintendo the opportunity to concentrate more on their strengths of game creation. In addition to that, it gives Nintendo the opportunity to streamline the roll-out of the newest iterations as they come, and optimization should really be easy to monitor, no matter the system customers have.

Just the idea of the company overhauling the entire online infrastructure is very big. For years, Nintendo has been seen as lagging behind everyone else when it comes to online, and even with strides made this generation, there were many areas that still need attention. Those strides that were made, however, such as Miiverse appear to be returning and being improved, as well. That would be a wonderful thing because there is so much more potential to be realized with Miiverse and many other feature. Something of note here, several months ago, Iwata-san actually addressed this when he talked about how great some of their ideas had been, but they were also disjointed in their execution. This leak seems to show Nintendo’s solution to that.

As far as select 3rd Parties having development kits in-hand already, that is highly probable seeing that reports starting coming out after E3 that Nintendo did, indeed, meet with several publishers in closed-door meetings. That would make the possibility of dev-kits being in their hands very likely. Add to that, the information leaked by Square-Enix during their recent event, and a lot seems to be adding up.

Now, I can’t say for sure that this information isn’t just a compilation of speculative bits put together with other things to appear more plausible, but I think the desire for much of this progressive information for Nintendo’s next console makes it all so appealing.

There is more that I could go over from the leak, but I think this really sums everything up pretty well. If you feel like I have missed anything, fell free to drop your thoughts in the comments section below. I look forward to seeing/hearing more on NX going forward, and hopefully directly from Nintendo, themselves.

Rumor Has It…

One thing about me and this blog, I really Luigi Whispers to Iwata-sanam not a fan of rumor-spreading, but this information is really exciting and much more plausible than most things that we find. A fresh batch of Nintendo NX rumors have surfaced on Reddit, and there is some nice info there.

In addition to sharing that information, I will also give my take on it. I figure that way I’m not really violating my disdain for the rumor mill because…well, just because.

Okay, so the details that have apparently come forth can be seen below, but before we get to them, let’s learn a bit more about the supplier of the information. It appears the individual seems to have some connection to Nintendo of Japan.

  • He’s under strict NDA with Nintendo Japan
  • Information is from March 2015, with some updates from June-July
  • He received a bunch of patents (some of them are public now), info about what Nintendo is planning and a list of games potentially in development (some of them may or may not have been cancelled), third parties included

I wonder how much of this may be spot-on…

  • NX is a platform, not tied with a single device
  • Wii U is still in the picture thanks to good software results for games like Splatoon, will still be the main home console in 2016
  • 3DS is a bit old, they’re planning of replacing it. Some games will still come out on it, but big projects are being moved on portable NX
  • With NX, Nintendo wants to create a platform where they can develop software for multiple devices with ease, from the home console to the portable to smartphone and tablets. They’ll have a big catalog available for multiple platforms, with cross buy, cross saves and cross play, similar to what Microsoft is doing with Xbox One and PC thanks to Windows 10 (that allows you to play many Xbox games on PC, which is also getting a bunch of ports from Xbone). Each platform will still have exclusive games
  • NNID is tied to the single device, but it will allow you to share details between platforms, like friends lists, contents, local co-op games, etc. Thanks to the new membership program (the successor of Club Nintendo), we’ll benefit from the new Nintendo policies in terms of rewards
  • They’ll show the portable in spring 2016, will be out for the end of the year or spring 2017 max. Specs will be higher than PS Vita but nothing mind-blowing, screen resolution should be 540p, considering 720p if costs go down. BC with 3DS was problematic
  • Wii U successor will not have an optical drive, which will be optional. It will sync with the portable (not obligatory). Specs won’t be super high, but close to PS4/X1 (doesn’t know how much, like with the portable this is still subject to change anyway). Cross games will look better on the home console
  • Nintendo is focusing a lot on the anti-piracy system
  • Big focus on the OS as well. They hired people that worked for Google on Android, the guys who worked on the Gamecube OS and Wii U browser are there too. Optimized versions of the same OS for every NX platform (think, again, W10), each with its set of specific functions. Updates will come out at the same time, they’re focusing on making the OS blazing fast on every platform
  • The home console can connect with the portable to send to it its own version of the games you buy, will use the same tech as the Wii U-Wii U Gamepad streaming to do that, or the internet connection
  • The home will have bc with the Wii U. Gamepad should be compatible as a controller, considering selling it standalone. Can connect with the portable for off-tv and bc. WiiMote compatibility is being considered too. As for support, since the new home won’t have an optical drive, they’re considering an external one. Also being considered NNID/eShop bc for titles bought on the eShop. Seems they’re considering digital games sharing too, but this bit is not perfectly clear
  • The portable will have its own internal memory, which will be expandable
  • There will be a complete overhaul of online infrastructures, but Nintendo is determined to hold successful operations as Miiverse, extending it even further and making it a central hub for communications by developers and a meeting place for players. It will be even more interactive with the ability to upload videos and screenshots in an integrated system and not dependent on the game
  • Voice chat and interactions between users will be revisited too, much will depend on the users age though, to protect the minors
  • The home will be out 6-12 months after the portable, creating the “NX system” that will allow Nintendo to better use their resources in games development
  • They approached third parties during E3. Capcom, Square-Enix, Ubisoft and Electronic Arts already have devkits. Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Sonic, F-Zero and Metroid are in development, doesn’t know if these are main episodes or spin offs. Zelda is currently a Wii U only title due to high development costs, but they can reconsider to have another big game at NX launch
  • Prices will be low, 200-300€ (for the home?), considering a bundle with both for no more than 500€
  • Many of these things will be discussed in future Nintendo Directs, which will have a different host in every market if Nintendo can’t find a new CEO by October
  • A new 3D Mario will be shown, along with a new Zelda trailer. Retro moved their project on NX, will not be unveiled before 10-18 months
  • They’ll talk about a new “Club Nintendo”, which will be in full function with NX
  • Considering making agreements with phone carriers in order to better manage applications like Miiverse, Club Nintendo and the ability to purchase software by phone. Some of these will be out by March 2016
  • Is everything set yet? Yes, but with Nintendo you’ll never know. If he has updates he will share them with us.

Tomorrow, I will share my thoughts on everything that has been “leaked”, and believe me, it’s a lot. Until then, let me know what your thoughts are of the information. How close to reality do you think the rumors are?
